As a part of World Team Tennis, the Springfield Lasers have brought in a number of well-known players over the years from Martina Navratilova to John McEnroe, Jimmy Connors, Monica Seles, Lindsey Davenport, and Maria Sharapova.

But few of those players would have caused a large turn-out had they not even taken the court to play, and that's just what happened on Friday night when 28 year-old Anna Kournikova came to Springfield as a member of the St. Louis Aces.

Because of a wrist injury, Anna couldn't participate in the match, but maybe that was somewhat appropriate when you consider that she is just as well-known for her off-court image as she's known for what she's accomplished on the court.

Born in Moscow, Kournikova began making waves in tennis at age 15. And despite being ranked as high as 8th in singles in 2000, she never won a WTA event by herself. She did team with Martina Hingis to win two grand slams in women's doubles, but by then Kournikova was becoming even more well-known as a model, appearing in hundreds of magazines and showing up in movies and music videos.

She was also named as one of the 50 most beautiful people in the world by People magazine, so even though she couldn't play, it did not keep a crowd of over 1,600 from turning out just to get an autograph and picture at Springfield's Cooper Tennis Complex.
